Join the Metallurgical Society for their webinar: Insights from computational and numerical models of furnace tapping processes.

About this event

Smelting furnaces contain extremely aggressive and temperamental fluids, slags, metals, mattes and salts. The majority of furnaces are tapped through ports in the furnace called tapholes. While furnaces have been tapped for thousands of years, much is still unknown.

Tapping has mainly been an experience based sub-process in the silicon and ferrosilicon production process. To get this part of the process into a more scientific area, represented by e.g. CFD modelling, conceptual models on the process is needed.

This webinar will discuss the challenges of tapping, the fundamental knowledge we have in this area and the work that is being performed.

Speaker/s

Dr Quinn G. Reynolds

Technical Specialist, Pyrometallurgy Division - Mintek
Quinn Reynolds obtained a BSc(Eng) degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Natal in 1997. He was awarded an MSc(Eng) degree by the University of the Witwatersrand for his work on the modelling of radiation in DC arc furnaces. In 2009, he was awarded a PhD by the University of Cape Town for his work on arc modelling. Quinn is currently working on high-speed measurements and photography of DC arcs, the use of high performance computing, and various aspects of pyrometallurgical process modelling at Mintek.
